Holidays are around the corner and we want to encourage you to keep not only your health in mind but others as well. From November 22nd, 2021 to December 31st, 2021, all new patients will receive half off on the initial consultation. Here at Icon Chiropractic, we strive to promote health and wellness throughout the year. During the holiday season, it is easy to forget about our health, but it is often the most stressful time of the year. Having to deal with gift shopping, crowds and lines, cleaning, knowing what to get people, and cooking often lead to unhealthy eating habits. Did you know, “74 percent of people reported the most popular coping mechanism for stress is eating unhealthy snacks.” Here are some tips to getting your through the Holiday season stress: Listen to music, watch your favorite show, take a nap, go for a long walk, get a massage, exercise, and Chiropractic care.
Meet Alex
At a very young age, Alex Castellanos learned from the hard work of his parents that there is nothing more rewarding in life than helping others. Upon arriving in the United States, his parents worked in the fields- and although they had very little, always managed to give back to those in need.
After assisting a patient who needed translation services to resolve pain they were experiencing, he was disheartened by the lack of accessibility and bilingual chiropractors available to help. This was a defining moment for Alex that ultimately inspired him to pursue a career in chiropractic.
Alex currently holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Eastern Washington University and is looking forward to continuing his training at Life Chiropractic College West to ultimately become a Doctor of Chiropractic and obtain his Diplomate in the Gonstead Technique.
Message from Dr. Anson
During my time at Icon Chiropractic, I was honored to be part or your path to achieving wellness. There is much to be said regarding what it means to truly be healthy. B.J. Palmer, developer of Chiropractic, once said, “The preservation of health is easier than the cure of disease.” Prevention is always better than the cure itself. It’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life back home in Hawaii. Best wishes and health to all of you.
Toy and Food Drive

We also request that attendees are over the age of 12. Dinner will be provided to you and your guest.
Thank you and look forward to seeing you there!
Meet Anson Ho
Hello, my name is Anson Ho, and I am excited to join Icon Chiropractic for my internship! I was born and raised in Hong Kong. My family and I then moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where we enjoy the island life!
I was very active in sports activities when growing up, and I have seen different healthcare professionals for sports injuries, which made me interested in working in a healthcare setting, helping people with injury prevention and rehabilitation. This led me to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Throughout my 4 years in college, I had opportunities to visit different healthcare professionals and found that chiropractic care is a great treating option for achieving wellness. Chiropractic focuses on the causes of issues rather than just the symptoms. This fits my philosophy of health, and I decided to pursue my Doctorate of Chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic West. I also recently received my certificate of Nutrition Coach from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
What I like about chiropractic is that it is a natural healing method, which does not require drugs or surgeries. I have seen patients walked in with lots of pain and walked out with a big smile. I am always being amazed by the power of chiropractic and the human body. I can’t wait to a part of your health journey and see more amazing stories!
Blood Test
Why do Chiropractor’s order blood test?
The health of your blood plays a key role in the overall function of your body. Did you know that vitamin deficiency has been linked to back pain? Recent studies show that vitamin and mineral deficiency in your blood levels can cause you to have back pain.1 Now, more than ever, people have developed a sedentary indoor lifestyle. Although this may sound relaxing, more and more people have reported feeling fatigue with aches and pain. Their blood levels often show vitamin d deficiency. Find out your blood levels today! Just call the office and inquire about it. The normal blood intervals are often much broader than they should be and can overlook results.

Neuromuscular Reeducation
The brain and the body have an close connection. Your brain controls everything in your body. Think of your brain as a the master controller. It enables your body to do everything from walking, reading, writing and even breathing.
When you want to do an activity such as going for a walk, your brain sends signals through your nerves that tell the muscles in your legs to move. It also tells your muscles how fast to move and how much force to use.
Those nerves are not indestructible and can be damaged. When that happens, you might think you would like to walk, but the brain cannot effectively send signals to your muscles to accomplish the task.
Neuromuscular re-education helps retrain the nerve connections between your brain and your soft tissues so that they effectively communicate with each other to accomplish everyday movements like walking or waving.
The main benefit of neuromuscular reeducation is that it helps restore the connection between the brain and impaired muscles. The goal is to give you a wider range of motion. It can also help relieve pain by releasing pressure on impinged nerves, giving you better balance, and strengthening your muscles.
The ultimate goal of Neuromuscular Reeducation is to give patients a superior quality of life without having to endure invasive surgeries.
Denneroll
The Denneroll is a spinal orthotic designed to restore curvatures to the spine. It is really easy to use and has been researched thoroughly to improve spinal curvatures. A complete analysis of your X-rays is done to see if you are a good candidate for the Denneroll. Based on the findings, recommendations for why type of Denneroll and also how to properly use it are provided through your doctor. The pictures above show the difference between spinal curvatures in the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) with the spinal orthotic. The Denneroll is only used for 15-20 minutes per day and has great results. Please feel free to inquire about the Denneroll to our doctors or staff.

First and foremost, let us begin by saying that this past year has been filled with ups and downs but we have made it to the new year, 2021.
Comment from Dr. Alan Wu:
Dear practice members,
Year 2020 has been an unusual year and luckily for us it is going by with a blink of an eye. Like many of us, there were many good things happened this year but unfortunately overshadowed by the ongoing pandemic fiasco.
With that, here are some of the “wins” happened to ICON this year we would like to share with you:
ICON has gone completely digital. No more paper, HOORAY!
The team has expanded with a awesome associate. With Richard on board, the clinic has increased the capacity to serve more in the community.
New patient orientation class has pivot to virtual platform so more people can benefit from it.
And many more!
Lastly, and also most importantly, is to wish everyone a safe holiday season and stay healthy and strong. Year 2021 is gong to be different and awesome; I can sense it!
Dr. Alan Wu DC
Comment from Dr. Richard Sharma:
This year has been one of the most eventful years of my life. Near the beginning of the year, I was in China and India on a Chiropractic mission trip helping those in need when the COVID-19 pandemic had just began. By the time I arrived back to the states, no one had understood the gravity of the situation and what was to come. I am grateful that I was able to make it through this year healthy and stronger than ever but I couldn’t have done it without help. I’m lucky to have joined such a great practice with great practice members. Stay strong. Stay healthy.
Dr. Richard Sharma DC
Start your year with the Standard Process 21 Day Detox (Purification Program):
What is it?
Purify, nourish and maintain a healthy body and weight.
Includes a variety of supplements taken daily, along with a nutritional shake that offers essential whole food nutrition.
Meal plan provided including a variety of vegetables and fruits for the first 10 days, with select protein added on day 11.
Gluten-Free!
How does the 21-day purification program work?
You may not be consuming the correct amount of nutrients, and that can affect the normal functioning of the body’s detoxification pathways. The purification program provides a nutrient-dense menu, giving the body a break from the processed, sugary, fat-laden foods often found in the average American diet.
This allows organs like the colon, kidneys, and liver to function more optimally. Purification can support healthy phase one and phase two liver detoxification processes, which cleanse the body of naturally occurring toxins.
Are you experiencing…
Fatigue?
Difficulty sleeping?
Low libido?
Skin issues?
Reduced mental clarity?
Joint discomfort?
Food cravings and weight gain?
Expectations
When you complete the 21-day purification program, they will have developed a new way of eating based on enjoyable healthy food.
Increased energy
Better digestion
Decreased caffeine and food cravings
Improved weight management
Clearer skin
Clearer thinking
Better management of toxin load in the body
Shinier hair
Better sleep

We want to create a healthy and safe environment for all of our patients.
In response to the virus and flu season, we have Hand Sanitizer within our office.
We have Tea tree oil, On Guard, and Lemon essential oil running in our diffuser ALL day to help Disinfect Air for you. We sanitize all Door Knobs every hour and we sanitize the entire office every day even our floors.
1. Nothing is proven to work against COVID-19, because it is a new virus. 2. Vitamin C has worked against every single virus including influenzas, pneumonia, and even poliomyelitis.
Vit C should be your daily supplement, i take just about 3,00-4,000 grams throughout the day. I will triple that dosage when I am coming down with something.
Again, no better way to combat these viruses, bacterias, or yeast than enhancing your own immune system by rest plenty, exercises regularly, eat healthily, drink water plenty, think positively, and chiropractic consistently.

Just exactly when is the flu season? As the CDC stated, in the United States, flu season occurs in the fall and
winter. While influenza viruses circulate year-round, most of the time
flu activity peaks between December and February, but activity can last as late
as May (1).
Why is that? The WebMD believes many things play a role in
making the flu more common in the winter, which includes (2) :
The virus lives longer indoors in winter because the air is less humid than outside.
While it is alive and, in the air, it’s easy for people to inhale it, or for it to land on the eyes, nose, or mouth.
We spend more time indoors and have closer contact with each other, which makes it easier for the virus to spread.
Since we have a better idea about the “flu season”, it’s time for us to read in between the lines to understand more. As stated, the viruses circulate “year-round” but are just more active during winter. In other words, day in and day out doesn’t matter what seasons or months, viruses are always out there and ready to latch onto us. What’s, even more, is this not only applies to the virus but it also applies to bacteria, parasites, and yeasts. So, what does that translate to? Does that mean we must take medication, antibiotics, antifungal, antiviral substances every day to combat them? I sincerely doubt it.
Here is another fun fact.
Even with all the medical
interventions and advancements, we will never outduel the evolution of these
microorganisms because of their intelligence and fast adaptability. If that’s the case, why not take a step back
and examine our precious immune system, which has been working for us since
human existence.
If you investigate the most recent data of the Corona Viruses incident, the last I read (2/25/2020 6:00 pm) was 80,598 people got infected, 2712 death and 28110 recovered globally. Studying closely into the death number you will find the majority of the number lies on ages 55 years or above with pre-existing conditions top with cardiovascular and type 2 diabetes (3). The fatality rate for non-pre-existing patients is ONLY 0.9%. In another word, the best defense against any microorganism out there, in my opinion, is non-other than enhancing and boosting our own immune system. It is obvious that we need to take care of our body daily so we can be ready for any opportunistic attack from these micro-organisms, which includes eating healthy, resting plenty, exercising regularly, and taking supplements daily. And now research has also shown compelling evidence of how chiropractic can potentially enhance the immune system as well. One of the studies showed a single adjustment can increase immune system signal interlukin-2 significantly which translates to a stronger immune system (4). In a different study, it showed spinal adjustment can increase the count of neutrophil which is part of the white blood cells. The last study worth mentioned here is by Selano et al, “The effect of the specific upper cervical adjustment on the CD4 counts of HIV positive patients.” The conclusion of this study was after 6 months of chiropractic adjustments, the HIV positive patients’ CD4 (part of the immune system) has raised tremendously.
In summary, we are not alone on this planet. The living microorganism is around us all the time. It is in our best interest not to outduel them but work with them synergistically. The best practice is to keep one’s immunity at the optimum at all times, so we can worry less about the flu season and enjoy life more. I hope this article finds you well and ease any worry you might have about the current virus situation.
“Wave”, not your typical kind of ocean wave, but the knowledge wave that is. Last month, one of the esteemed chiropractic school, Life Chiropractic College West, hosted one of the year’s biggest Chiropractic summit in Oakland, CA. They do this every year to gather the brightest chiropractic minds and technologies to one place for us to learn and grow. It is a treat to attend these seminars because I always learned a lot and walked away with multiple pearls to enhance patients healing in the office.
This year we had multiple chiropractic giants speakers such as Dr. Dan Murphy DC, chiropractic neurologist Dr. Ted Carrick DC, Emmy award producer Del Bigtree and world-renowned endurance athletes Colin O’Brady to name a few. For the complete lineup, please click the link https://www.lifewestwave.com/speakers/.
They were all inspiring and passionate, just a wonderful place to get recharge and refuel the purpose of why we do what we do.
While all of them were tremendous speakers, one speaker really got my undivided attention. Dr. Heidi Haavik, a PhD in human neurophysiology and Director of Research at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, is definitely something else. Perhaps due to my molecular cellular molecular biology background, I am particularly keen on the science she presented. Dr. Haavik’s focus is on how chiropractic adjustment affects the brain, specifically the pre-frontal cortex a.k.a the brain’s conductor. The pre-frontal cortex, which coordinates body’s immune system, endocrine system, digestive system, decision-making ability, emotional regulation and much more, is a part of the brain that should always be working at the most optimized level. By using the Somatosensory Excited Potentials (SEPs) technology, it clearly showed the profound effect of the chiropractic adjustment to the prefrontal cortex.
Dr. Havvik’s has published multiple studies in medical journals with contents such as chiropractic and fall prevention in the elderly population, in stroke patients, enhance the performance ability in athletes, and bite forces in health individual just to name a few.
I took as many notes as I could and put together a presentation for our practice members. The presentation will be held on Wednesday, 11/6/2019 7:00 pm at our Campbell office.
Come join us and learn more about how you can optimize your brain and health naturally through chiropractic care!
New tool introduced in ICON!
As part of the ICON Chiropractic Center core principle, we constantly evolve and strive for better technology to enhance the healing process for our practice members. True to our words, ICON Chiropractic recently purchased a brand new diagnostic tool, Myovision, as part of the assessment for quantifying patient care outcome. Myovision, a FDA class 2 diagnostic tool, is a handheld scanner that is designed to measure electric activities in skeletal muscle. The science behind Myovision is based on dysfunctional joints in the spine would lead to inappropriate muscle firing, which in turn cause asymmetrical muscle pattern. In addition to the muscle balance, it also calculated the Electrophysiological (EP) score to determine the total muscle activity. Elevated EP Stress Score readings on a first exam are associated with the acute state of subluxation and/or spinal health.
And that’s not it! With the additional upgrade of the Myovision to Dynarom, ICON Chiro center has the capacity to track the range of motion (R.O.M.) in all joints. With this technology, we can quantify the numerical measurement of joints R.O.M. DIGITALLY. In ICON Chiro, we always emphasize function more than pain (because pain is very subjective and function is not) and this is exactly how we going to objectively measure it.
Along with digital X-ray and nervoscope, we now have one more tool to assess the outcome of the care. We are very excited of this new addition and cannot wait to see how this will enhance your healing journey in our office.
I always remembered the day I went to see my dentist 5 years ago when I had an extremely painful toothache on my left lower side. The pain was on and off for 6 months and I never wanted to get it checked because I told myself the pain would eventually go away. Well, it went away alright, along with my whole tooth. The dentist told me the cavity has gone so deep that even a root canal wouldn’t be able to saved it. He had to extract the tooth, plant an implant and put a crown on it, and the whole procedure had cost me close to $6000. He left me with a few words which I would never forget: had you been flossing everyday for preventative measurement, then we wouldn’t had to take that tooth out.
When it comes down to health, prevention is really the key. In the United Stated, our main stream healthcare has always been focusing on active cares (aka sick cares) such as cure and treatment. While it is important to know what to do when things are happening, but wouldn’t it be easier to know how to avoid it in the first place?
In ICON Chiropractic Center, we firmly embrace the paradigm of prevention first and have branched out to 6 elements:
Posture well
Eat well
Think well
Move well
Rest well
Adjust well
Numbers 1 to 5 is self-explanatory and No. 6 is what needs elaboration.
The Central Nervous System (CNS) control and coordinate every single system, organ and cell in the body. It regulates how we sleep, move, eat, repair to just name a few. It really is the master system of all and it resides INSIDE the spine. In other words, the spine holds the key to your optimal health and has to be subluxation (misalignment) free. This is why we always educate our practice member to incorporate chiropractic care as part of their lifestyle after the pain has been alleviated because it is an essential piece to the health puzzle.
Subluxation free spine = healthy nervous system = optimal health.
It is our sincere wish that we have driven this important message to you.
Finally, as a way to continue spread and reinforce our messages to our office members and community, we have re-done our waiting room wall and put our vision and mission statements on there as a constant reminder of why ICON chiropractic exit in the first place.
April has been an interesting month, to say the least. On top of the water pipe damage which led to an “unintentional” office upgraded, I have finally decided to take on the tall task of sitting in the Gonstead Diplomate test after 12 years of chiropractic journey. The majority of the practice members know I practice a unique kind of chiropractic method called the Gonstead technique, which is meticulous full spine analysis with specific adjustment hence delivered the profound results. I connected with the Gonstead technique since the first quarter of school and have been deeply involved since then. I was the Gonstead club president from 2009-2010 in Cleveland Chiropractic College, Los Angeles and was president in 2010-2011 in Life Chiropractic College West. After graduated from Life West, I am still involved with the Life West Gonstead club as a guest lecture for workshops and seminars.
Gonstead diplomate, which is a status program provides a structure whereby any chiropractor can progressively develop and refine their competency in the analysis, adjusting, and management of the chiropractic patient, as developed by Dr. Clarence S. Gonstead. In order to qualify for this 2 days testing, doctors have to practice Gonstead more than 3 years and have attended more than 230+ Gonstead continued education. It is not an easy test as candidates have to study a wealth of comprehensive materials, x-ray analysis, case management, and specific Gonstead adjustment. I took the test on 4-27-19 and passed with flying colors, woohoo! Although this is not the pinnacle of the career but definitely an excellent news worth to celebrate. So next time when you see me, please don’t get weird out by the big smile on my face. There is now 71 registered Gonstead Diplomates in the Gonstead Clinical Study Society. You can get more information on this topic at https://gonstead.com/fellows-diplomates/.

When you search the key word “chiropractic care”, undoubtedly many of us would pop up on your screen. Besides location, price, insurance and reviews, one other important aspect should pay attention to is what kinds of “method” the doctor is practicing.
I often use martial art as an analogy to describe Chiropractic profession. In general, learning martial art is a great training for oneself for both physical and mental. However, with many selections such as Tae Kwang Do, Judo, MMA to name a few, which one is good for you? This is where as the consumer, you will have to do the homework. You will need to read, watch and even try them out before you settle the one you really enjoy. Sometimes you might not find it right away but continue search you will find “THE” one.
Same can be say about the chiropractic profession. Chiropractic is a great health sector to facilitate the healing journey for oneself. We correct the misalignment (called Subluxation) in the spine to restore the proper NERVE communication and function. Same as the martial art, we also have variety of methods within our profession; Gonstead, SOT, upper cervical, NUCCA, and activator to name a few. In fact, if you google it, there are approximately more than 200+ methods. Aren’t that amazing?
What is GonsteadMethod?
The Gonstead method was founded by Dr. Gonstead in 1934 and has quickly became one of the longest running and profound technique since then. He used his mechanical engineering background to develop the system based on 2 principles: the foundational theory and the intervertebral disc (IVD). Just like building a sky scrapper, the foundation must be set right in order to build a strong structure. Same principle can be applied to human spinal column which need to have a balanced pelvis (foundation) for spine to be optimal. In addition, he was also the first person to discover the inflamed and misplaced IVD is one of the main causes of spine to be subluxated. He also found that in order to deliver the BEST RESULTS, it is important to be as specific as possible and to only adjust the segment that was misaligned and not to randomly manipulated (“cracks) and rotate the spine.
Why Dr. Wu Choose Gonstead?
The Gonstead method emphasizes the importance of finding the cause of a problem and not chasing the symptoms. That is the reason why Dr. Gosntead was able to produce results in shorter time frames than most doctors. He understood the importance of the biomechanics of all joints and foundation level principle in conjunction to nervous system regulates everything in the body. The meticulous examination, detailed full spine x-ray analysis, precise instrumentation reading, and specific adjustment is what really resonate with me. I have been studying Gonstead Technique since first quarter of chiropractic school and still enjoying as much as I was 12 years ago.
Out goes the old, In comes the new. ICON Campbell 2.0 is here!
On Sunday 3/31/2019, the Universe pulled one of the biggest prank on ICON–Campbell to celebrate April Fool’s – by busting a water pipe in one of the adjusting rooms! It was disastrous to say the least. The water pipe was galvanized at the faucet junction, creating corrosions and the pipe just couldn’t sustain the pressure anymore. The water squirted out about 20 minutes before we were able to shut it off. The aftermath was devastating as half of our office was flooded and damaged. We were fortunate to keep the door open during the repairing period but damage was already done and caused major inconvenience for practice members and staff.
What’s even funnier is this is not the first time it happened. Four years ago we also had a water pipe bust (different one) on the VERY FIRST day we opened ICON Campbell. We had to shut down for 2 weeks for repairing last time, but this time we kept our doors open. Hey, second time is the charm and we are evolving!
The old saying of what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger is so true. After 3 weeks of non-stop blowing of dehumidifiers (hey, free sauna room!), remodeling, and finally here we are, ICON – Campbell 2.0! We got brand new floor (well, half of the office), fresh painted wall, new décor and most important of all, ready to serve even more practice members! Come say hi and check out the newly renovated office as we are heading into the second quarter of 2019!
Soreness or pain at the elbow on the bony bump on the outside is called “tennis elbow”. Soreness or pain on the inside is called “golfers elbow”.
What causes golfers and tennis elbow?
Golfer Elbow
Soreness and pain occur when the tendons (tough tissue that connects muscles to the bone) on misaligned elbow bones are stretched and irritated by repeated movement of hand, wrist, and forearm. This can cause tiny tears or inflammation in the tendon. “Tennis” and “Golfer’s” elbow can also be caused by activities that nor sport related such as:
Painting
Computer work
Carpentry
Typing
Gardening
Knitting
Tennis Elbow
What are the symptoms?
The first sign of golfers or tennis elbow is usually tenderness and pain when pressing on the epicondyles (bony bumps) on either the outside or inside of the elbow. this can progress to a dull, constant pain or sharp shooting pain. other symptoms include:
Pain when the wrist or hand is moved.
Pain when lifting a heavy object.
Pain when making a first, gripping, or shaking hands.
Restricted supination of the forearm and full extension.
How long will my recovery take?
Recovery time depends on the severity of the injury as well as factors such as age, health, and previous injury. Mild injuries can recover in a few weeks but more severe injuries can take several months to recover.
Treatments
Specific chiropractic treatments
Clear the subluxation in the spine first to turn on the nerve supply. It is based on the author’s experience and clinical management that 5th and 6th cervical (neck) are usually the culprits.
Lateral radial head (one of the elbow bone) could be misaligned either forward or backward.
Lastly, check the wrist if the elbow is free of misalignment.
Pain Control
Apply ice to your elbow 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day.
An elbow strap or “counterforce” brace is worn around the fullest part of the forearm muscle, just below the elbow. It eases the pressure on the tendon and spreads the force throughout your arm.
Nutrition: Main goal is to supply the body with proper nutrition to enhance recovery time.
Omega 3’s: EPA, DHA, and AHA
Protein: undenatured whey, rice, or pea.
Proteolytic Enzymes, take with empty stomach
Chondroitin Sulfate
Glucosamine HCL: can be used if no analgesic been taken
Vit C
Magnesium
CoQ10
Rehab Exercises & stretch:
Tennis Elbow Stretch: Start with the tender part of your forearm resting on a tennis ball, with your palm facing up. With your unaffected arm, apply a downward pressure onto your affected arm. Maintaining that pressure, move your wrist up and down. You should feel the sore spot moving back and forth across the tennis ball.
Golfer Elbow Stretch: Start with the tender part of your forearm resting on a tennis ball, with your palm facing down. With your unaffected arm, apply a downward pressure onto your affected arm. Maintaining that pressure, move your wrist up and down. You should feel the sore spot moving back and forth across the tennis ball.
Eccentric Wrist Flexion: Sit erect with your affected forearm supported on a table with your palm facing upward. Use your non affected hand to assist with flexing the wrist. Then let go of the support and slowly control the affected down eccentrically to the start position.
Eccentric Wrist Extension: Sit erect with your affected forearm supported on a table with your palm facing downward. Use your non affected hand to assist with extending the wrist. Then let go of the support and slowly control the affected hand down eccentrically to the start position

Most sprains are caused by rolling the foot inward. This can stretch or even tear the ligaments that help support the ankle and foot. Ligament damage can lead to instability of the ankle and frequent re-injury. Ankle sprains may take from 6 weeks to several months to heal. Early treatment, specific chiropractic care, exercises, and bracing can decrease the risk of re-injury. The information below can help speed up your recovery, decrease your pain and help prevent re-injury.
Early Treatment
Specific Chiropractic Adjustment: the first 24 hours of injury is considered to be the “golden window”. The chance of full recovery will increase greatly if the ankle is adjusted within first 24 hours of injury after fracture and complete torn ligament been ruled out. Proper neurological supply, blood supply, and alignment are essential for optimal healing.
R.I.C.ERest: avoid painful activities to give your ankle time to heal. Limited waling and other standing activities when the ankle is painful or swollen.
Ice: recommended 20 minutes on and 40 minutes off 3-4 times a day. Place a thin towel between your skin and the cold pack to prevent a rash or burn.
Compression: Swelling is a normal response to an ankle sprain. Applying an ace bandage can help decrease the swelling and help the healing process. It is important to re-wrap the ace bandage on a regular basis starting at the toes and finishing well above the ankle. Avoid wrapping the ankle too tight. You should be able to easily put two fingers under the wrap.
Elevation: keep the ankle elevated above your heart as much as possible during the day. this will help decrease the swelling and speed the recovery.
Walking Aid: use a walking aid like crutches, a cane, a walking stick or a walker until you can walk without a limp. Try to bear some weight on your injured ankle while using the walking aid if you can do so without increasing your pain.
Brace: a proper brace should be given based on your condition. Continue to wear this brace until your doctor directs otherwise. After the ankle has healed, ask your doctor if you should continue to wear the brace with activity.
Early Exercises: Do these exercises without increasing pain or swelling.
Aerobic Exercises:
a stationary bike can be helpful in the healing process without adding stress to the ankle. Start with 10 minutes with low resistance.
Gentle range of motion: repeat 2-4 times per day
Circle the foot clockwise, and then counter clockwise 10 times each direction.
gently bring your toes and foot towards your shin and then point your foot and toes away. Repeat 10 times each direction.
Strengthening:
Arch raise in sitting/short foot exercises:
sit in a chair with both feet on the floor. Try to raise the arch of your foot while keeping your goes and heel on the floor. Work up to holding this position 30-60 seconds. Repeat 5 times.
Arch Raise in Standing:
progress this exercises to standing when you can stand on the involved leg without increased pain. stand on both feet; try to raise the arch of your foot while keeping your toes and heel on the floor. Hold 30-60 seconds, repeat 5 times.
Tandem Standing:
Stand next to a chair or wall with on foot in front of the other. Hold for 30-60 seconds. Repeat 5 times with the right foot forward and 5 times with the left foot forward.
One foot standing:
standing on one foot keeping the arch of your foot raised.
Turning your head left and right while maintaining your foot position and your balance.
Closing your eyes while you maintain your foot position and your balance.
One foot standing on foam pad:
Repeat above exercises on the foam pad.
Nutrition: It is essential to supplement with proper trace minerals/vitamins so the body can heal at the faster rate. Here are some of the suggestive supplements we recommended in our office:
Proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain. Take with the empty stomach.
Chondroitin Sulfate
Glucosamine HCL
MSM
Omega 3’s: strong anti-inflammatory substance.
Magnesium.
Vit C.
It is recommended to take high-quality supplements rather than over the counter products for better absorption and usage.

Plantar fasciitis, a common heel pain for athletes and working people, can be excruciating and annoying the same time. The plantar fascia is a thick ligament on the bottom of your foot. It is a strong ligament that runs the length of your foot from the heel bone to the toes. Although it is strong, it is not very elastic and flexible. If it is repeatedly overstretched, it can become inflamed and painful, a condition is known as plantar fasciitis.
What will I feel with Plantar Fasciitis:
Sharp, stabbing pain on the bottom or side of the heel or in the arch of the foot.
Pain that is worse in the morning or after any period of inactivity. As you begin to move around, the pain level usually improves.
Pain that gets worse after a prolonged period of standing, walking, or running.
Pain can last for several weeks or months and can range from mild to severe.
What Causes or contributes to Plantar fasciitis?
Excess weight.
Tight calf muscle and Achilles tendon.
Abnormal foot mechanics. Flat feet or high arches can affect the way that pressure is distributed across your foot.
Inadequate footwear. Excessively flat shoes that do not support your arch leave the plantar fascia unprotected. A shoe with a medium heel can heighten the arch and decrease stress on the plantar fascia.
Specific sports activities. Activites that put more pressure on your foot and require it to stretch repeatedly increase your risk. These activities include running, walking long distance, jumping, tennis, basketball, and aerobics.
Standing all day.
The sudden change in activity. Beginning an exercises program, such as high-impact aerobics, after a period of inactivity or changing your running surface from grass to road.
How long will it take to get better?
The problem can last from a few weeks to several months. You can lessen the time for recovery by following these suggestions:
Specific Chiropractic Care
plantar fasciitis is usually the symptom of something higher up, i.e. ankles, knees, or even pelvis.
when the pelvis is rotated, it puts the excessive weight at the inner knee which ultimately collapses foot arches with the end result of flat feet. Flat feet stretches fascia which then puts excessive weight and pressure and causes inflammation.
Specific chiropractic care of the foot, knee, and pelvis can restore bone alignments and integrity of arches.
Nutritional protocol
An anti-inflammatory diet is a must for plantar fasciitis. Dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and Brussels sprouts are a good place to start.
Omega 3 such as fish oil is also a great anti-inflammatory substance to add on.
In addition to nature diet, you might also want to consider supplementation such as proteolytic enzyme bromelain, vitamin C, magnesium, and chondroitin sulfate.
Exercises:
Rehab exercises are crucial to enhance the outcome of the condition. Here are some easy and effective exercises:
Calf and arch stretch. Stretch 3-4 times each day. Hold each position for 30-60 second and repeat 3 times in a session.
Stretch with your knee straight: stand with your hands on the wall. Place one foot behind you. Keep your heel on the ground and keep toes pointing straight ahead. Bend your front knee to feel a stretch in the calf of the back leg.
Stretch with your knee bent: do as above with the back knee bent.
Arch stretch: stand with your toes of one foot against a step and your knee straight. Place the arch of the other foot against the heel. Bend the knee over the foot until you feel a stretch in your arch.
Toe crunches
Plantar Fasciitis is a debilitating condition which can hinder the quality of life. This condition can help tremendously by proper chiropractic care, rehab exercises, and nutrition. Any questions? Contact us at info@ICONchiropractic.com.
Our bodies are truly amazing machines. They are complexed, delicate and governed by an infinite internal wisdom called innate intelligence. At any given moment, this innate intelligence is always striving to adapt and excel in the environment we are in. A great example is if today we are up on the high mountain, your respiratory system will work harmoniously with high altitude to make sure you will have enough oxygen to keep you alive. You don’t have to tell “it” to work harder, it just does for you.
In chiropractic profession, we work with this innate intelligence by restoring the nerve connection between the brain and body. How we do it is to remove “Subluxation” (misalignment of the spine which causes nerve interference) so the body can repair at the most optimal condition. When the spine is subluxation free, anything can happen.
With that, I would like to share one of my miracle cases with you during the Guatemala Chiropractic Mission trip.
The trip was from 2/2/18-2/11/18. We had in a combination of 5 Gonstead doctors and 4 Gonstead dedicated students on this trip. In 5 working days, we have seen over 2000+ patients. Patients came to us with a variety of conditions because they knew the principle of chiropractic, which is to fix the subluxation and correct the nerve interference. As I was taking the history of one of the Mayan ladies, she told me her left year has been deaf for over 10 years. She couldn’t remember how it started but the hearing just gradually faded away. I scoped her with a nervoscope (part of the Gonstead protocol) and found out there was a major reading on the top of the left neck. I looked at her neck from behind and showed left ear lob was higher than right. I palpated the neck, moved it around and range of motion was severely restricted turning left. The verdict: she has a subluxation on her first bone (called atlas) which stuck to the left. I set her up, thrust and wham, the atlas just went “clunk-clunk”. Right after the adjustment, she was a bit lightheaded, but after 2 minutes she starts rapid firing in Spanish to both the translator and me. I couldn’t understand much of it but from the facial expressions and energy between them, I knew something has happened. The translator turned around and told me: she can hear, she can hear!! Three of us started jumping up and down and celebrate the moment of the truth, when the body is in a subluxation-free state, anything can happen. There is no greater joy for a physician to know he has done his job to enhance a patient’s healing ability. 10 years of deafness, 1 adjustment, gone.
I like to finish this blog by quoting two prominent doctors in our profession, Dr. Christopher Kent, and Dr. Gilles LaMarche:
The body is a self-healing mechanism. Cut your finger, it heals. Cut the fingers of a corpse; it does not. Life heals.
The nervous system is the master system of the body. Every aspect of human experience is processed through the nervous system. When there is interference with the function of the nervous system, not only can it compromise your physical well-being, but it can also have psychoemotional consequence because it distorts your perception of the world and limits your ability to respond to the environment. When this happens to a significant number of people in a society, you have a sick society.
What I do as a chiropractor is locate and correct the cause of that interference.
Our ultimate goal is to maximize the expression of your perfection within, allowing your innate intelligence to be fully expressed throughout your life.
This is truly an amazing profession, and I am honor and blessed to be part of it.
Canola oil has been widely used because it has been token as the new alternative “healthy” oil and is less expensive to other vegetable oils such as soy, cottonseed, safflower and corn oil. It is said the canola oil contains no saturated fat which can potentially clog up your arteries. However, the science has stated otherwise. The science literature stated by ingesting a single dose of 71 mg of Canola oil per day would increase your triglyceride level by whopping 47% compared to medium chain fatty acid such as coconut oil. (1) In addition, an article released on Dec. 14th, 2017 from Psych Central stated there are strong associations between consuming canola oil and weight gain, decrease working memory and increase Alzheimer. (2)
Part of the reason why canola oil could potentially raise your triglyceride is that canola oil contains a higher level of omega-3 oils. Supposedly omega-3 oil is good for you, but in order to increase its shelf life, remove the odor, and sustain high heat cooking, lots chemical processes have been added which also included hydrogenation process. This process can form as much as 40% trans fatty acids in canola, even more than soybean oil. (3)
Other detrimental effects come with canola oils are following:
Canola depletes vitamin E which will impact chronic diseases like heart, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.
Canola increases the rigidity of membranes (which is a major aging factor and trigger for degenerative diseases like diabetes).
Canola has the potential to damage hearts creating fibrosis impairing the action of vitamin E (crucial in inflammation).
In human studies, there was an increase in lung cancers as well as heart damage.
Daily canola oil raised the triglycerides a staggering 47%.
Comment’s from Dr. Alan Wu DC:
It is unfortunate but once again we have been misled by big cooperation mass marketing strategy. Science once again has spoken out and it is time to educate ourselves again. Like previously stated, when in doubt, go with coconut or cold press virgin olive oil. You will probably be more safe with these 2 than others. I take a full teaspoonful of coconut oil every morning for energy and get my body ready for the day. Also, the holiday season is here and team ICON would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday!

This article was published earlier this year, Jan.18, 2017 from Annals of Thoracic Surgery. This elite group was established in 1989 and the main purpose is to serve as the benchmark for risk-adjusted outcomes in cardiac surgery and is the foundation for all quality measurement and improvement activities of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. The aim of this study was to assess whether osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT, similar to chiropractic adjustments) contributes to post heart surgical sternal pain relief and “improves postoperative outcomes.” They divided them into 2 groups: control group vs manipulated group. Here are the results:
VAS pain scale
Control group 3 vs Manipulation group 1
Mean Inspiration Volume (ability to breathe):
Control group 1400 ± 588 mL vs Manipulation group 1781 ± 633 mL.
Hospitalization Days
Control group 22 ± 6 vs Manipulation group 19 ± 5
days.
As a results, the paper showed patients got manipulated (similar to chiropractic adjustments) have significantly reduced pain, improved function, reduced hospital stay and associated costs, and avoidance of drugs and all the risks.
Comments from Dr. Alan Wu DC:
What a great study. This paper supports the fact patients went thought chest operation would received tremendous benefits from manipulated/adjustments. Adjustments should start within 5 days postoperative along with rehabilitation. Not only it reduced pain, increased function, and it also reduced financial cost as well. While Chiropractic has been stigmatized into musculoskeletal issue only, this is certainly not the case. The foundation of chiropractic is based on fixing Subluxation (mis-position of the bone), restore nerve communication between the brain and body in order to achieve highest bodily functions and healing. It is really a wonderful health care profession to keep us living optimally. As usual, should you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at info@ICONChiropractic.com and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
